As the sun approaches its summer solstice, we will be spending more and more time out in the sun, either at the pool or at the beach. To add to the fun, I am putting together a tarot reading and summer solstice ceremony to light the sun to the point where it can’t be seen.
Tarot is a method of divination using cards that has been around for centuries, and it is one of the oldest forms of divination. It is believed that the Tarot cards were originally used to tell stories, but the cards have come to be interpreted in a myriad of ways in modern times.
Summer is a time of change. For those with the Tarot, it means taking new opportunities. For others, it means finishing what they have been working on. For those celebrating the Summer Solstice, it means celebrating the longest day of the year. For everyone, it means that the days are getting longer and longer. This is the time to let go of winter and embrace the season of Light.
On the 20th. June 20, 2021 is the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. Oh, we need that life-giving solar energy this year, don’t we? We need to stretch, go outside and feel the sun on our skin, feel safe enough to open our arms and embrace the beautiful world around us. I want to feel like a happy child on the Sun tarot card, joyfully accepting all the blessings the universe offers. I want to feel like the sun that sees everything and feeds everything and everyone I see. I want to feel like a strong horse jumping over the garden wall and going on an adventure. I want to feel like those sunflowers, big, strong and always ready to go.
The summer solstice is a magical time in many ways. Most of us who live in the North look forward to this day, the official start of summer, the warmth, the lightness, the freedom. This is a time when the sun is at its highest point in the sky and we can pause and enjoy the light of the longest day of the year. The solstice is a time when our wishes and desires really begin to speak to us. They come from the shadows to the forefront of our hearts and minds, they want to be recognized and allowed to shine like the sun. As the solstice approaches, we have the opportunity to regroup, explore what we are truly passionate about, and set good intentions and goals for the months ahead. This is a time of fertility, a good time to nurture the areas of our lives that we want to see grow and flourish. The summer solstice can also be an ominous time for some of us. I love the heat, I feel at home in a tropical climate and I enjoy the ease of summer. And yet, on a universal level, I feel much more comfortable in the world of the moon, in the inner, quiet places, the places where I can feel safe to expose my true nature. It can be hard for us moon people to open up to the sun, but the rewards can be great. Call upon the energy of the solstice to expand you, to stretch you, to reveal your glory to the world. And of course, the solstice is a great time to look at the Tarot. Stand in the sun, let your cards be bathed in light and watch them talk to you. Here is a text I read every year to commemorate the event:
Try this spread and let me know what opens up for you. Celebrate and bask in the light, shine, bloom. I bless you all.
You are no doubt familiar with the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. While this is an exciting time for many, we can also look to summer solstice as a time for deeper reflection. On this night, we can have a little fun with the Tarot, and see what the cards have to say about our personal lives.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you honor the summer solstice?
The Summer Solstice is a time of celebration, but many people do not know that it is also a time to honor the star Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. It is the day that we are closest to this star, the day when Sirius rises in the east at dawn and sets in the west at sunset. The Summer Solstice marks the beginning of summer and the time when the day grows longer and the night shorter. For a lot of people, the summer solstice marks the unofficial start of summer, and their vacations are often a big part of that. And the solstice is also a great time to celebrate the end of one season and the beginning of another. But the summer solstice is a bit more than that, and it’s a great time to get in touch with who you are and what you see in the world of astrology.
What does the summer solstice mean spiritually?
The summer solstice occurs on June 21st and marks the culmination of the sun’s yearly path through the 12 signs of the zodiac. Beyond the change in seasons, this day is celebrated for its connection to the spirit world and rebirth. It is a day to celebrate the transition from one year to the next, and a time to unite oneself with the Earth once again. It is a day for purification, for renewal, and for rebirth. The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year. This is when the days are longest and the nights shortest. It is actually the opposite of what most people think. This is the time of year when the days are shortest and the nights longest. This is also when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, and it is when the sun rests at the longest point of its yearly cycle.
What are some summer solstice rituals?
I’m not sure I buy into all the hype around the summer solstice (June 21st) or the winter solstice (December 21st). But I do find solstices about as important as any other time of year. That’s because they’re the only times of the year when we can mark out the passage of time with the seasons. As the summer solstice approaches in June, so do the traditional solstice celebrations. The old pagan calendar says that the sun began to move north in the 10th century B.C. and the summer solstice was celebrated on June 21 that year. (This is the reason that many people realize June 21 is a big deal: it is the starting point of summer.) The following year, the calendar was changed to start on June 21, which is why we now celebrate the summer solstice on the longest day of the year.
