Tarot Court Cards + Masculine/Feminine Archetypes

The connection between astrology and Tarot is not a new one. In fact, it’s been around for quite some time, likely dating back to the middle ages. In the 12th century, Tarot was not only popular as a form of fortune telling, but it was also being used for various other purposes, such as divination and astrology. Though the two go hand in hand, there are some differences that should be noted.

The Major Arcana are the most important cards in a tarot deck and a great way to explain the psychology of archetypes, how they work and how we can understand them. The Major Arcana is a collection of 22 cards which contain a great deal of information about the topic of the card and it’s a way to understand people’s personalities (and as a gift to them).

In this short article, I will be discussing the Tarot Court cards and how they correspond to the Masculine/Feminine archetypes.

A few years ago, I read the book King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine (Robert L. Moore, Douglas Gillette, 1990) on the recommendation of a friend who shares my love of Jungian archetypes.

I think we all have an interest in being curious about the world of others. If you’re wondering why a woman should read about male archetypes, here’s the answer. That’s how I feel about religions I don’t profess and politicians I don’t agree with. It may not be a part of me (or maybe!), but if it’s a part of you, it’s enough to keep me interested (at least at first).

As I delved into the archetypal world of the tarot, I naturally had to look again at these constructs representing the male psyche with King, Warrior, Magician, and Lover. They are associated with the adolescent male archetypes divine child, hero, predator child, and oedipal child. In the interest of time, I won’t talk about the immature hyperactive and hypoactive types. If you’re curious, a quick Google search will help.

Of course people have responded to various female archetype systems including queen, mother, wise woman, and mistress, , but there are others that have 7 types, and also the newer system with 5 archetypes that breaks with tradition : Femella, Potens, Creatrix, Sapientia, , and Antiqua of Jailbreaking the Goddess: A radical revision of feminist spirituality (LaSara Firefox Allen, 2016).

Create a system

As I began to develop my own understanding of archetypes, I played with many different ideas, including the idea of father warrior and mother warrior. After the baby was born, my partner and I felt it, because warriors protect themselves from death to the point of self-sacrifice, just likeparents.

I decided to use the following system:

King, warrior father, sorcerer, lover

Queen, warrior mother, wise woman, mistress

But it seemed too simplistic, dated and at the same time a bit unbalanced. Truly, I felt that the energy of the Mother and the Father was also in the other three archetypes, not separately. Kings, wise women and lovers all protect death in their own way.

As I began to read the Tarot, I discovered many traits of these archetypes in the four colors and began to explore and expand mysystem. The characteristics of the mother and the father can be found in all four colours, just as the empress and the emperor can be associated with the court card.

I began to use the Tarot suits as a structure for an archetypal system until I reached a certain point in my research. While I still includes the dichotomy of masculinity and femininity, these labels are flexible enough to be applied to the spectrum ofidentities. Just as the Queen cards of the Tarot do not necessarily refer to a person identifying as a woman, the cards Adult and Adolescent Masculinity and Adult and Adolescent Femininity do not necessarily refer directly to the unique complexities of individuals. Instead, they can be seen as energies or human aspects that we all share. We all use these active and passive energies, whether they correspond to our prescribed identity or not.

Some see knight assent, but I see as both a male and female card as sent in all colors:.

silk, passive messenger, supernatural/material messenger, divine messenger and inner messenger.
