All of us who have ever loved someone who has been hurt by a partner are aware of the pain and the frustration. We often find other people who have suffered similar experiences and suddenly we feel very sympathetic to them.
A few months ago, I received a message from a guy who had contacted me many years ago with a similar problem. His issue was that he felt like he was getting his feelings hurt by every woman he ever dated. He felt like he was always being rejected and he just didn’t know what to do about it. It was a very painful experience for him.
I am Scorpio, which means I am ruled by my emotions. I am also a psychic knight, which means I am a visionary. All of these things make me very skilled in the art of receiving. Those with an affinity for psychics, or the stars, or astrology, or psychic readings will know exactly what I am talking about.
My spouse was in a car accident last week. Three ribs were fractured and a lung was compressed as a consequence. He’s back home after a few days in the hospital. However, owing to other circumstances, this will be a lengthy and difficult recovery.
All of this falls on my shoulders at a time when I’m already overburdened with responsibilities. I was terrified he’d die, and I was also terrified of what was ahead for us.
But then my friends rushed in, showering me with prayers, love, Reiki, presents, financial assistance, and baked muffins. Relief and thankfulness washed through me. I couldn’t believe my good fortune!
It didn’t take long for another emotion to rise to the surface: remorse.
Because, as it turns out, I have a “receiving issue.” When someone does anything kind for me, I feel compelled to return the favor. I can’t simply sit back and take it all in. Nope. I need to “earn” this compassion in some way. I began heading to a darker place as soon as I found myself in this mentality. The entire “I don’t deserve this…there are others in needier situations than me…” thing. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah paragraph
When things seem to be improving, old negative tales tend to resurface. It’s comparable to what Gaye Hendricks refers to as “the upper limit issue,” in which you create difficulties unconsciously just as you’re about to reach a new level in your life. For example, suppose you get a once-in-a-lifetime bargain and then have a sick or get into a big squabble with your adult kid. Instead of celebrating a victory, you’re lowering yourself down to a level where you’re uncomfortable but at ease in. To put it another way, it’s self-sabotage.
This is something I’ve seen many times throughout my life. But there has never been a time when this has shown out as forcefully as when individuals have given me great compassion when I most needed it. If there was ever a moment to put those old tales to rest, this is the time.
So it’s back to the drawing board for me to weed them out. I need to let go of them so that others who care about me may enjoy helping me as much as I enjoy helping them. There is no happy ending to that tale if I can’t trust my friends to be there for me when I need them the most.
I am eternally thankful for every act of kindness given to me, and I must remember that it is perfectly OK to be the recipient of such affection. I’m not going to push it away. Instead, I’ll put my faith in the fact that when it’s time for me to give back, I’ll do it in the proper spirit – one of love, not guilt.
I’m finally getting to the bottom of my issue.
